Aquamation for Exotic and Small Pets: Birds, Reptiles, Rabbits and More

When most people picture pet cremation, they picture a dog or a cat. But households across Delaware are filled with all kinds of companions, from parakeets and cockatiels to bearded dragons, snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas and ferrets. These animals bring just as much love into a home as any dog or cat and their loss deserves the same level of care. At Delaware Pet Aquamation, we welcome exotic and small pets and this post explains why aquamation is often the best choice for them.

Why Traditional Cremation Struggles With Small Animals

Flame-based cremation was designed with larger animals in mind, and small or delicate remains can be difficult to process cleanly in a traditional chamber. Because these chambers are built for high heat and larger bodies, families with very small pets sometimes worry that little or nothing recognizable will be returned to them. Aquamation solves this problem by using a much gentler process built around water rather than fire.

How the Process Works for Small and Exotic Pets

Our aquamation system uses warm water and a mild alkaline solution to gently accelerate what is essentially a natural process of decomposition. Because there's no open flame and no extreme heat, the process is far gentler on delicate bones, feathers and shells than traditional cremation. Each pet is placed in its own individual compartment with a unique identification tag that follows them through the entire process, so even the smallest bird or reptile receives the same private, careful treatment as a large dog.

What Families Can Expect

Because aquamation is so gentle, it's especially well suited to birds, reptiles and pocket pets whose remains might otherwise be damaged by intense heat. Families are often surprised by how much is returned to them after the process, since aquamation typically yields up to 20% more ash than flame-based cremation. For an animal that was already small in life, having more of their remains returned can bring real comfort during a difficult time.

Private and Communal Options Are Still Available

Just as we do for dogs and cats, we offer both private and communal aquamation for exotic and small pets. A private service means your pet is aquamated alone and their ashes are returned to you, while a communal service is a more affordable option for families who don't need ashes returned. Pricing for both is based primarily on weight, which means small and exotic pets are often among our most affordable services.

Caring for the Whole Family

Grief doesn't scale with an animal's size. A family that has lost a beloved rabbit or a snake they raised from a hatchling is grieving just as deeply as a family who has lost a large dog and sometimes that grief goes unacknowledged by people outside the household. Reptile, bird and small mammal owners often tell us they feel like their loss isn't taken seriously by others, which can make the experience even more isolating. If children in your home are struggling with the loss, our post on talking to kids about pet loss may help. Our team never makes assumptions about how much an animal meant to a family based on its size or species.

Keepsakes for Small Pets

We also offer memorial keepsakes appropriate for smaller remains, including compact urns and other mementos sized to fit the animal. Whether you're memorializing a beloved cockatiel or a bearded dragon who lived a long and happy life, we can help you find a keepsake that feels right for the size and spirit of your companion.

How to Get Started

If you've recently lost an exotic or small pet, or if you simply want to understand your options ahead of time, we encourage you to reach out. Our team can walk you through pickup options from your home or veterinarian, explain pricing based on your pet's weight and answer any questions about how the process works for your specific animal.
